Shkira Volodymyr Volodymyrovych

Lieutenant Colonel

Volodymyr Shkira was born in Kyiv on February 24, 1981.

He served in the Armed Forces and then in the SSU for 4 years as a non-commissioned officer. After 2005 he continued his service in the operational units.

In mid-June 2014, Volodymyr went on official trip to the area of anti-terrorist operation. The task of the group was to install special equipment to record the facts of violation of the ceasefire agreements by the terrorists.

On June 24, Volodymyr was on board an MI-8 helicopter. The group of specialists returned after the successful completion of the installation of equipment near the Ukrainian checkpoint № 6 on Mount Karachun near Sloviansk. Almost immediately after takeoff, a missile from a portable anti-aircraft missile system of terrorists hit the helicopter. Lieutenant Colonel Shkira died along with other crew members.

For military prowess by the Decree of the President of Ukraine of 08.08.2014, Lieutenant Colonel Volodymyr Shkira was awarded a state award - the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree (posthumously).

A memorial sign was erected at the site of the death of the Ukrainian crew on Mount Karachun.

Volodymyr is survived by his wife and daughter.
